Birchip

Overview

Birchip is in the middle of Victoria’s cereal growing region and features a main street divided down the middle by a large median strip. In the Centre of town located on the median strip is a larger than life statue of a bull known as Big Red.  Birchip is known as the home of the ‘Mallee Bull’.

A short drive from Birchip will take you places that still use part of the old wild dog fence or on the other side of town you come to Tchum Lake an eighty acre recreational lake.  Travelling north from Birchip you come across undulating sand hill country featuring Mallee type flora and fauna while travelling in other directions the land is dead flat.

Birchip enjoys hot, fry summers, beautiful autumns, mild winters, glorious springs and amazing Mallee sunsets.

History

Settlement began in the area known as Wirrim Birchip around 1882 and the town was surveyed as Birchip in 1887 - though known by the original name for quite some years later.
