Buloke Shire
Five major towns and five smaller towns are among the many localities in Buloke Shire. Nandaly and Sealake are in the north; Birchip (with its Big Bull) and Wycheproof (with a railway line in the main street) are more central being sited above Donald and Charlton to the south. The Mallee region is recognised as stretching northward from its beginnings at Birchip.The district is predominantly dryland farm country that produces grain.
Hindmarsh Shire
Hindmarsh Shire is located in dryland, broadacre grain farming country of Western Victoria. The shire encompasses part of the Big Desert National Park, including Wyperfield National Park and the Little Desert National Park. The Wimmera River flows through Dimboola and Jeparit to connect nearby Lake Hindmarsh and Lake Albacutya.
Horsham Rural City
The Wimmera district, with Horsham being it's major service centre, is a wheat and wool growing region. The Grampians National Park and Little Desert National Park are nearby. In addition to those parks, the Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park, of even closer proximity to Horsham, is known for some of the best rock climbing sites in Australia. Natimuk has recently developed into an artistic and creative community.
Mildura Rural City
Mildura is a major river city and tourist destination. Dryland grain and sheep farming, together with horticulture, including citrus and wine production, is the major focus of local primary industry. The National Parks and river reserves of this Mallee region give contrast to the vineyards, orchards and broadacre farms, affording a variety of scenic beauty. Mildura City is a major and fast-growing provincial centre that boasts a busy regional airport.
Swan Hill Rural City
The Swan Hill region shares many of the attributes of the neighbouring Mildura region, in particular, extensive horticulture, viticulture, a 'Mediterranean' climate and the natural state border of the Murray River.
West Wimmera Shire
The sparsely populated West Wimmera Shire shares a lengthy border with South Australia. Included in the shire area of 9,107 square kilometres, are The Big Desert, part of the Little Desert and the central Lake Charlegark. The Glenelg River is to be found in the south and the shire boasts spectacular wetlands.
Yarriambiack Shire
The Shire of Yarriambiack is situated in north-western Victoria, in the heart of the State's wheat belt. Yarriambiack's main township, Warracknabeal, is a thriving rural commercial centre. An important grain growing region, the shire is a part of the Wimmera district explored by Major Thomas Mitchell.
