Overview
Charlton known as the ‘Friendly River Town’ is located in North Central Victoria on the Calder Highway midway between Melbourne and Mildura. Located in a picturesque setting - it is situated in the valley of the Avoca River in the last of the foothills of the Victorian highlands. Charlton features traditional country town aspects and excellent filming locations including the Avoca River with its natural beauty and heritage style buildings.
History
Charlton took its name from the early pastoral station on which it was established and is an English place name meaning ‘village of farmers’.
At the time of white settlement the area was inhabited by a small group of the Dja Dja Wurrung aboriginal tribe.
In 1863 Charlton's first commercial building was erected by John Flug - a slab and bark wine shanty. A bridge was built across the river in 1867.
