Sea Lake

Overview

Sea Lake is the heart of the vast cereal growing foodbowl of Victoria - a sight to behold in spring and at summer harvest time, it is a vibrant small town with mammoth community energy to make things happen.

Sea Lake has a simple concentrated residential and shopping district and is located next to Lake Tyrrell a very large inland salt water lake and very close to Wyperfield national park and is in the heart of traditional sandy Mallee country.

History

Tyrrell Downs run was established by W.E. Stanbridge, the manager of the East Charlton run, who followed Tyrrell Creek north to Lake Tyrrell and set up the station in 1847. The property was bought by E.H. Lascelles  in 1884, as part of his plan to render the Mallee fit for agriculture. He hired a hundred men to clear the land, then floated a public company to raise capital, thereby establishing one of the largest wheat farms in the world (20 000 ha).

The company went into the black in 1900 but pests and drought ate away at the venture and the farm was broken up and sold to smaller selectors. Among them were the poets John Neilson and his son, John Shaw Neilson.

The site for Sea Lake was discovered in 1838 and was named by an early settler of the Port Phillip area, Edward Eyre. The lake's sealike impression inspired the town's name.
